Cognitive Hypnotherapy & NLP

I use a combination of Cognitive Hypnotherapy and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) to facilitate effective change.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern therapeutic approach based on principles of neuroscience which combines ideas from Evolutionary Psychology, Positive Psychology, Cognitive Theory and Neurolinguistic Programming. It’s a flexible model which continues to evolve its approach and adapt its techniques to stay effective and relevant.

NLP describes a communication and human behavioural model. How we use and make meaning of language, the effect this has on our experience of our lives, the roles we play and how we operate are all emphasized. We all make 'maps' of how we experience the world and 'programmes' of our behaviour. These programmes and 'maps' guide our reactions and behaviour.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP focus on treating each person as a unique individual. We each create, perceive and enact our issues in our own distinctive way. The way our brain filters information is exclusive to each and every one of us, which is why people living through the same event will have different experiences of it. It’s the interpretation of that event and the meaning we give to it which makes it unique. How our mind filters information creates a unique version of reality.

The Unconscious Mind

Research suggests that 90% of our behaviour is unconscious. The unconscious mind regulates our physiological, emotional and behavioural reactions. It contains everything we know that we are not explicitly aware of and it stores all the memories, skills, habits, attitudes and beliefs we have learned over time.

The unconscious uses past experiences to explain present situations. The brain makes connections between the past and the present to determine whether the current situation is positive or negative. This assessment is then used to predict what the future consequence is likely to be. In doing this, our unconscious is continually reinforcing our existing belief systems and subsequent experiences.

For example, if you have a phobia of spiders, every time you experience that fear you are physically and mentally matching a present situation (e.g. finding a spider on the kitchen counter) with an unconscious reconstruction of a past representation (most often the first time you encountered a spider which scared you). It’s usually a specific experience which creates the learned phobic behavior. The unconscious mind’s purpose is that of keeping you safe, so it remembers to activate a fight or flight response every time you come into contact with a spider. This learned behavior, which is stored in the unconscious mind, can be changed and replaced with a new positive response.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP can help get you back in the driver’s seat so you can guide your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
